Something I hadn’t counted on when signing up for a tour was getting propositioned by the guide who is taking us through Peru to La Paz.
On day ONE. Uh-huh.
I know it happens with local guides who see fleets of tourists stopping by for a day or two, some looking for a bit more full-service fun than what’s offered in the brochure. I haven’t felt so awkward and wanting to run far, far, far away since long ago speed-dating days, combined with bad first date days and the calling-the-cops-to-remove-an-asshole-from-my-house-day…and then some.
Of course I shut him down, but it’s put a shadow over the trip for me. Like someone looking over your shoulder while holding an umbrella, thinking they are doing you a huge favour and should be grateful for their offer. Even when they own up to having an 11-month old child with their separated partner to everyone at breakfast the next day.
Since then, plus getting a dressing down from another group member who isn’t thrilled with his complete lack of preparation in most other areas, he keeps trying to be overly nice and make us feel like he’s doing us a favour when he’s doing his job. Dude, I paid for this.
Who does that besides soon-to-be-quitting-their-job-and-apparently-wanting-to-go-out-with-a-bang-(or several)-tour guides? Ugh.
Ok, rant over.
